Assistant Director of EH&S (6/13/07)

General Summary: The Assistant Director of Environmental, Health Safety (EH and S) reports to the Associate Director of the EH and S Department. The primary purpose of this position is to work with the Associate Director of EH and S on Environmental Health Safety issues. This position is responsible for oversight of programs that positively affect the safety health of employees, students, visitors of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Oversight of occupational health safety programs, including hearing conservation, respiratory protection, confined space entry, electrical safety, blood borne pathogen safety, contractor/construction safety, measurement of physical chemical stressors.

  2. Providing compliance assistance with all RIT environmental programs, including air permitting, water permitting, hazardous waste management, hazardous material transportation, oil storage.

  3. Provide compliance assistance with EH and S requirements for programs managed by other RIT departments, including asbestos abatement disposal, pesticide use wetlands management.

  4. Assume the responsibilities of the Associate Director of the EH and S Department in their absence, including managing incidents departmental emergencies, providing oversight of EH and S staff student employees.

  5. Provide regulatory-required EH and S training programs for the RIT community.

  6. Serve as EH and S resource consultant to Institute officials, Public Safety Operations staff, other members of the RIT community.

  7. Support all major EH and S initiatives, including the development implementation of a campus-wide EH and S management system.

  8. Respond to EH and S emergency incidents, including spills, occupational injuries, indoor air quality complaints other EH and S incidents as required.

  9. Support Public Safety Operations staff during major campus events (e.g., Commencement, Move-In, etc.).

  10. Perform other EH and S duties as required.

Hazardous Waste (RCRA) Responsibilities: The responsibilities of this position may include the generation, handling, disposal or other management of hazardous wastes. These wastes could include, but are not limited to, chemical or paint wastes, regulated medical wastes, universal wastes, electronic wastes, used oil or any other waste material that is determined to be a hazardous waste.

The person in this position is required to complete a program of classroom instruction on-the-job training that will instruct them to perform hazardous waste duties in a way that ensures RIT's compliance with the requirements of the Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA). This training program will include initial training within 6 months of assignment in this position annual refresher training.
Qualifications

Education: BS in EH and S Management or related field required.

Experience: 5 years experience in the EH and S field with applied knowledge of federal, New York State local EH and S regulations/standards. Certified Safety Professional and/or Certified Hazardous Material Manager preferred.

Knowledge Skills:

Must have a valid NYS driver's license complete RIT's driver certification program.
